Sisterhood Lasts a Lifetime

oldpicThough many of us associate the benefits of sorority membership with the college years, Sigma Kappa is a lifelong influence on its members. Besides offering support, encouragement, and an atmosphere that promotes success and well-being, Sigma Kappa creates opportunities for women to become part of a worldwide sisterhood of successful, caring women. Because growth and friendship are important to women throughout their lives, the Sigma Kappa experience doesn't end with graduation. Our bond continues to bring us together over the years, to share experiences, serve others, and have fun! With Sigma Kappa, college is the beginning of a sisterhood that lasts a lifetime.

Helping Every Sigma Kappa Sister To Be Her Best

serviceSigma Kappa is one of our country's most vital women's organizations, with 105 active college chapters in 35 states and the District of Columbia. More than 130 alumnae chapters keep members in touch with each other and involved in Sorority activities long after graduation. Sigma Kappa's goal is to help each member develop to her greatest potential, and one of the most important ways is through commitment to academic excellence. Every chapter adheres to the academic standards of its college community, always striving to increase chapter awareness and scholarship by maintaining a structured academic program in which every sister can succeed. Within a supportive environment, each Sigma Kappa is expected to do her best and to help other sisters achieve all they can as well. Sigma Kappa also provides valuable professional skills development to its members. Chapters provide opportunities for members to contribute their special talents to the group, and to refine and focus leadership skills they will need in work and community life. Trained national officers serve as resource persons to collegiate chapters, and collegiate representatives meet at national conferences each year to heighten leadership abilities, discuss contemporary issues of interest to women, and benefit from hearing professional speakers on a variety of topics. Through the Promise for Initiated Members program, Sigma Kappa makes comprehensive health and wellness information available to collegians. The program is designed to help sisters make responsible decisions regarding alcohol, nutrition, values clarification, time management, and personal relationships.

sistersEncouraging the intellectual, leadership, and ethical development of each member is vital to Sigma Kappa's successful sisterhood. By promoting these ideals through educational opportunities and philanthropic projects, the Sigma Kappa Foundation remains committed to sharing the gift of sisterhood while equipping our members with the values and skills to meet tomorrow's challenges.

The Foundation encourages and supports the scholastic development of our collegiate and alumnae sisters by annually offering more than 50 scholarships. Additionally, the Foundation provides funding for values-based programming and leadership opportunities for all members through workshops and speakers. Sigma Kappa has been devoted to the need for continued work on the study of aging and the needs of the elderly for nearly 50 years. By adding an emphasis on Alzheimer's Disease in 1984, Sigma Kappa has been dedicated to prevention, research, and treatment efforts for almost 20 years. Since its inception, the Sigma Kappa Foundation has awarded over one million dollars in research grants for gerontology and Alzheimer's Disease.

In honor of Sigma Kappa's Founders who were from Maine, Sigma Kappa adopted the Maine Sea Coast Mission as its first philanthropy in 1918. In addition to gifts from collegiate and alumnae chapters, the Foundation contributes thousands of dollars annually to benefit isolated islanders off the coast of Maine.
