What are Values?

Values define how we will conduct the organization and ourselves and identify what matters to most organizations.

What are Sigma Kappa’s Values?

Sigma Kappa’s values are personal growth, friendship, service and loyalty – Bound by a Promise. Our values are the accepted principles of our sisterhood. They are the core of our behavior and how we live our lives.

What is Values-based Recruitment?

Sigma Kappa has a proud history, solid values, and a clear vision for our future. The accomplishments of the organization will have little impact if we cannot continue to recruit and initiate society's best undergraduate women to positively influence our future.

As a premier national women's sorority each member must continue to perpetuate a positive legacy. One way is to reevaluate traditional recruitment practices. Values-based recruitment has been designed to help our chapter’s recruitment style to remain relevant to collegiate women. Values-based recruitment is the fraternity world's most cutting edge recruitment program and will help our chapter’s increase both the quality and quantity of their membership.

Why was Values-based Recruitment Created?

The trend began in 1993 when the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) adopted the no frills resolution and began educating and supporting campuses to move towards “no frills” recruitment. The intent of no frills is to take the focus away from the balloons, decorations, and costumes and to focus on the core of recruitment, which is having meaningful conversations with potential members.  The interpretation and acceptance varies by region and campus. In keeping with the “no frills” approach, campuses were encouraged to change their “skit or theme” round to a philanthropy-based event, so chapters could showcase the amazing amount of time they volunteer and the money they raise on campus, money that is contributed to their community and to their inter/national philanthropies.

In 2002, several university presidents and inter/national Greek organizations executive directors met to discuss the direction of collegiate chapters and Greek life. From this meeting, they developed a presidential initiative to transform the Greek environment. The outcome of these discussions is five recommendations designed to eliminate negative collegiate fraternity and sorority behaviors involving intolerable high-risk alcohol use. The ideas developed are referred to as “A Call to Values Congruence.” With the “Call to Values Congruence” initiative, sororities and fraternities have begun to shift their focus during recruitment.

What does this all mean for Sigma Kappa?

Sigma Kappa will be one of the first national sororities to embrace the concept of values-based recruitment. During recruitment, chapters incorporate the talents and achievements of members, chapter accomplishments and fun activities reflecting the values of Sigma Kappa.

Effectively communicating these allows members to determine a potential member’s genuine interest in the organization.

  • Sharing leadership success draws leaders

  • Highlighting academic achievements appeals to scholars

  • Displaying the strength of sisterhood attracts women who are supportive, fun, and whom you will never forget

  • Showcasing a commitment of time and energy to serve will attract those who want to give back

Incorporating values-based recruitment will change the trajectory of our chapter’s success and ensure its future by retaining the women who pledged for the right reasons.  Sigma Kappa members are strong women empowered to make the most of their collegiate experience by making conscious decisions about their actions and choices.

“Living our values is an everyday part of life, visible for all to see.”
